Lycoming College is hiring a Director of Campus Recreation and Intramural Sports to join the student life team.

Lycoming College, one of the nation’s oldest residential liberal arts and sciences colleges, invites candidates to apply for the Director of Campus Recreation and Intramural Sports position.  

With a first-rate undergraduate education and an increased commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable campus community that supports all faculty, staff, and students, we are seeking candidates who can support and contribute to our mission and 2021 strategic plan. The Director is responsible for the overall supervision and operations of the Recreation Center facility. The position oversees Intramural Sports and provides leadership for its operations.  Additionally, the Director, in collaboration with other campus offices, will provide recreation/health and wellness programs that appeals to all students. The Director also oversees the College’s club sports. The Director will work closely with the Athletic Department on facility scheduling and maintenance of the building and equipment.


Fulfilling this role requires the Director to be exceptionally attuned to the needs and experiences of all members of Lycoming’s increasingly diverse community and be adept at supporting and enhancing the campus experience of all with whom they work.

This is a full-time, 11-month position that is benefits eligible. The chosen candidate must be available to work a variety of hours including evenings, weekends.

What will I do in this role?

Recruit, train and supervise a student staff of unique identities and lived experiences (Recreation and Intramural)

Markets recreational facility and programs that is appealing to all members of the campus community
Schedule facility for a variety of activities, including intramural sports, casual recreation and special events
Establish and monitor operational procedures for recreational facility including equipment management
Provide leadership for exercise and weight rooms
Develop and manage operational budget for the recreation center
Provide leadership for Intramurals (with the assistance of the student staff) that is appealing to all students
Coordinate advising of club sports
In collaboration with other college departments, planning and organizing wellness initiatives e.g., aerobics, yoga, tai chi, Pilates;
Collaborate/partner to plan and implement creative recreational/health/wellness/intramural programs
Work closely with the Building and Grounds staff and other college offices to provide arrangements for special recreational events and other college uses of the facility (e.g., new student orientation, commencement, convocations, etc.)
Serves as a member of the Student Life Leadership Collaborative

The primary functions of this position may involve climbing several flights of stairs at one time, carrying equipment weighing up to 50+ pounds, pushing carts weighing up to 50 pounds, sitting for long periods of time, walking all around the campus and ability to work evening and weekend hours.

What are we looking for?

Educational Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree Required, Master’s Degree in Recreation, Physical Education, Student Affairs or related field preferred.
     
Required Abilities:
  • Commitment to fostering an environment of inclusivity and belonging
  • One or more years supervisory experience in campus recreation or related field is preferred
  • Knowledge of management practices for recreation facilities
  • Knowledge of club sports, Intramural Sports and Recreational Programming
  • Understanding of student development theory as it relates to advising individual students, student organizations and general student life issues
  • Understanding of safety standards and legal liability issues as related to campus recreation
  • Knowledge of standard budget management procedures
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of people including athletic coaches, students, faculty, staff, users of conference facilities and the general public.
